road bike or hybrid
Cycle with hike options. Park at the Mindemoya Park on #542 east This is an all day trip and it begins in Mindemoya where you can stock up on water and organic food then take #551 north. You will pass a gas station, restaurants, museum and a hospital.
Turn left at the first side road towards the lake. Turn right onto the Ketchankookem Trail. Enjoy the scenic view of L. Mindemoya. Cycle on until you reach the junction of #551. Turn left and enjoy riding on the wide paved shoulders to the Rockville Rd. Turning right on the Rockville Rd., you are challenged immediately by two short steep hills before the road levels out towards L. Manitou.
The road zigzags around the lake, allowing you several resting spots and lovely views of the lake. Past the Rockville Dock at Newby’s Bay the road rises again, stretches out and zigzags until you reach the Rockville Community Hall where you turn left (north) down a long
stretch of road to the Bidwell Rd. Turn left here and continue 1.7 km to the Cup and Saucer parking lot. This is an opportunity to hike up a part of the Niagara Escarpment to an elevation of 352 metres (1155ft.).
White and blue trails form a 9.9 km loop around the Cup and Saucer with great views of L. Manitou and the N. Channel. If you don’t choose to hike, then you can either backtrack or go on to M’Chigeeng via #540 for 6.5km (a busy highway with no paved shoulders).
M’Chigeeng is situated on beautiful West Bay. It has the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation, a museum, restaurants, several native galleries and a unique twelve-sided, teepee-shaped Catholic Church. To return to Mindemoya, ride on the paved shoulders of #551, or choose the back roads by turning right onto Spring Bay Rd., then left onto Hill St., which shortly becomes Corbiere Rd. beyond the Cross Hill Rd. Follow Corbiere Rd. past an art gallery and turn left onto Lakeview Dr. until it joins #551. Follow #551 south back to Mindemoya.
